Evening in the Emstrur-Botnar Hut
Convincing Davide was the hardest part.
After a 5 hours of walking in the no-mans-land we arrived at our campsite around 4pm and I must admit I was pretty tired. Probably the flat land or the 3 day with a heavy backpack, still didn't know, but this was probably the most hard day for me. After a quick snack we started to plant the tent and set for the night. As we arrived pretty early we choose one of the best spot, well sheltered from the wind and near a beautiful small river.
Chatting with some guys in the diner tent we discovered that there was a huge canyon right there to check, so after boring Davide to the death, I convinced him to go check it and wow, it's worth it!
It's called Markarfljótsgljúfur Canyon (easy to remember) and it's AMAZING. Is not amongst the larger canyons in Iceland, though it is deep, delving down 200 m (656 ft). This Canyon is less known than many of its counterparts across the country, but the visitor numbers do little to diminish just how stunning this natural gorge truly is. One of the major reasons for its lack of visitors is obviously its location.
After taking some time admiring this natural majesty we decided to get back to camp, have dinner and go to sleep as the next day is the final stretch of the trail.
